One of the concerns I have for children's mental, physical, and emotional health is the role that parental anxiety plays in the lives of children today. The way I see it, parental anxiety is leading parents to limit children's opportunities to explore the world as they travel their path to adulthood. As a child growing up in Houston, Texas, in the 1970s, I had a lot of room to roam. My bicycle gave me all the freedom I needed to travel around our suburban neighborhood. I rode my bike to school every day; in fact, so many children rode their bicycles to school that we were often warned by the school principal not to ride more than two abreast. We usually ignored these warnings, and the swarms of bicycles frequently spread all the way across the right lane of the road. Today, the number of children walking or riding their bicycles to school has so declined that less than 10% of children's trips are on bicycle or foot, down from an estimated 60% less than 30 years ago (Corless & Ohland, 1999). At my own children's school, there are no racks for locking bicycles and only a handful of children walk. A six-foot-tall chain link fence surrounds the school, and parents must be buzzed in to gain entrance. At the end of each school day, a long line of cars, SUVs, and trucks wait for the children to exit the school so they can be ferried to their next activity or to home for more schoolwork (or television viewing). I rarely see children playing in the streets around my suburban home, as they are all locked away "safe" in their homes.
